What Mattered Today

The ASX 200 closed at another record high, briefly trading as high as 9,296 before settling up +44 pts. Materials did the heavy lifting as copper reached fresh records in New York and London, while gold extended its strongest rally in six months. Hopes that a temporary shipping arrangement could restore some traffic through the Strait of Hormuz also continued to support sentiment ahead of the main phase of reporting season next week.

REA +3.43%: It’s always useful to get a read on the property market from Australia’s largest listings platform, particularly when sentiment around housing has become so negative. REA Group’s FY26 result suggests conditions are softer, but far from falling apart, with national listings holding up better than feared and the business continuing to grow earnings through pricing, product mix and cost control.

The psychology of investing

Hi James My question: given so many active investors underperform the market, how do you overcome the emotions ? An example of my thoughts is as follows: A year ago I liked the Australian Eastern Gas story (shortages, ready market etc) and decided to buy a few Elixir Energy at 4 cents. They steadily rose and after the Iran US war the price went to 16. Whilst I believed in the story I sold. 4x my money! The price has now fallen 50%to 8 cents. Was it dumb luck or great research? Probably a mix of both. I consider myself a medium term trader and am trying to understand the best way to trade. They say fear of loss outweighs other emotions, any winnings are justified as the investors cleverness. Most investors sell too soon but then no one wants to get caught holding a dud. I expect there are many articles and books on this subject - can you refer any you think are particularly worthwhile? Perhaps you could highlight a set of rules a disciplined investor should follow.

How do bond traders make money?

Hi, My understanding is that the bond market is many times bigger than the equities market. So how do bond traders make money? Do they simply buy bonds and then try to sell them for more than they paid, or do they try to buy them for a "good" price and hold them to maturity while getting paid the interest along the way?
