First Up

The ASX 200 delivered a stellar albeit surprising performance for the second consecutive Tuesday; this time it was an exceptional triple-digit gain that took the index to a fresh 5-month high, and within 1% of a new record. Interestingly, the SPI futures volume was average, implying gains were driven more by a lack of selling to meet the increased risk appetite than aggressive buying. The bears should be getting uncomfortable on several fronts, and we thought it worth highlighting the pertinent comment we made in yesterday afternoon. “The Match Out Report”:

US S&P 500 Index

The S&P 500 surged to new highs overnight, closing above 7700 for the first time. Oil prices moved lower after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview on CNBC that “we are in talks with the Iranians.” He then added, “There is a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow to open the Strait and move towards a more normalised position in this conflict.” A +29% surge in Palantir (PLTR US) further buoyed sentiment after it delivered another blowout result, with CEO Alex Karp describing demand for AI sovereignty as "otherworldly." Palantir enjoyed its best session in more than two years, while the semiconductor rally gathered pace, with Micron surging more than +7% and Marvell jumping nearly +13%.

The psychology of investing

Hi James My question: given so many active investors underperform the market, how do you overcome the emotions ? An example of my thoughts is as follows: A year ago I liked the Australian Eastern Gas story (shortages, ready market etc) and decided to buy a few Elixir Energy at 4 cents. They steadily rose and after the Iran US war the price went to 16. Whilst I believed in the story I sold. 4x my money! The price has now fallen 50%to 8 cents. Was it dumb luck or great research? Probably a mix of both. I consider myself a medium term trader and am trying to understand the best way to trade. They say fear of loss outweighs other emotions, any winnings are justified as the investors cleverness. Most investors sell too soon but then no one wants to get caught holding a dud. I expect there are many articles and books on this subject - can you refer any you think are particularly worthwhile? Perhaps you could highlight a set of rules a disciplined investor should follow.

How do bond traders make money?

Hi, My understanding is that the bond market is many times bigger than the equities market. So how do bond traders make money? Do they simply buy bonds and then try to sell them for more than they paid, or do they try to buy them for a "good" price and hold them to maturity while getting paid the interest along the way?
