Russell 3000 Index

The broad-based Russell 3000 index is another US bourse that’s surged to new highs this week on optimism around the Gulf of Hormuz and a strong reporting season. However, as we saw overnight, equities remain highly sensitive to developments in the US-Iran negotiations. It will be difficult for markets to build on recent gains until there is greater certainty on the geopolitical front and oil prices begin to ease.

The Trade Desk (NASDAQ: TTD) $US17.67

The Trade Desk delivered a weak 2Q result after the close and issued a disappointing outlook, sending shares down ~20% after hours. Revenue growth slowed to just 3%, while earnings and EBITDA both missed consensus.

The psychology of investing

Hi James My question: given so many active investors underperform the market, how do you overcome the emotions ? An example of my thoughts is as follows: A year ago I liked the Australian Eastern Gas story (shortages, ready market etc) and decided to buy a few Elixir Energy at 4 cents. They steadily rose and after the Iran US war the price went to 16. Whilst I believed in the story I sold. 4x my money! The price has now fallen 50%to 8 cents. Was it dumb luck or great research? Probably a mix of both. I consider myself a medium term trader and am trying to understand the best way to trade. They say fear of loss outweighs other emotions, any winnings are justified as the investors cleverness. Most investors sell too soon but then no one wants to get caught holding a dud. I expect there are many articles and books on this subject - can you refer any you think are particularly worthwhile? Perhaps you could highlight a set of rules a disciplined investor should follow.

How do bond traders make money?

Hi, My understanding is that the bond market is many times bigger than the equities market. So how do bond traders make money? Do they simply buy bonds and then try to sell them for more than they paid, or do they try to buy them for a "good" price and hold them to maturity while getting paid the interest along the way?
