First Up

The ASX 200 surged through 9000 yesterday, closing up +1% at a fresh 4-month high, supported by a soft inflation read (CPI). Gains were fairly broad-based for a triple-digit day with ~70% of the main board advancing, led by the rate-sensitive stocks. As we’ve alluded to in the last few morning reports, the ASX has been getting its mojo back of late, and the soft CPI hasn’t hurt the backdrop for local stocks. Even the Australian Financial Review quoted our comments along these lines overnight:

Australian 3-year bonds

Australian bond yields made fresh 3-week lows following yesterday’s CPI release, despite the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty around Iran. The inflation read should be soft enough to allow the RBA to sit on its hands for at least a few meetings to evaluate exactly how weak the Australian property market has become, and of course whether inflation really is under control. The 3s remain above the current cash rate, but if/when they start trading down towards 4.25%, it will be confirmation that bond traders agree with MM that the next RBA move could well be a cut.

SMSF or Industry Fund

I'm 75 and have had a SMSF fund for over 25 years - I love it, enjoy operating it and am happy with my returns. However, I've been thinking about simplifying life and super and am thinking of closing the SMSF and transferring funds into a professionally managed Superfund. The problem is, I have been spooked lately by news that a greedy Labor Government might have Super Funds in their sight. As I said, I love looking after my own super so, given this news, what are your thoughts on staying with what I know or taking my chances for simplicity sake and venturing to the Dark Side?

Ideas for improvements

Hi again, I know this message will reach you after the cutoff time, so please don't stress to reply tomorrow. I love listening to the MM podcast particularly at times when I can't be very productive, like driving. It would be awesome to have the option of listening to the reports as well. The Australian newspaper reader is a good benchmark for you to consider. Also, I really look forward to being able to access more ETFs data on your platform, particularly those listed on the ASX. Lastly, one thing I really miss from your charting tool is the ability of comparing two or more ticker codes. You present a lot of those comparisons in your reports, which I find really useful, but it is a shame we can't recreate some of it on the MM platform. Some ideas for improvement : ) Thanks, Angela
