Telstra Group Ltd (TLS) $3.67

TLS edged lower yesterday, making fresh multi-month lows while declining to 7% year-to-date. Its 1H24 result was okay, although guidance was updated towards the lower end of previous range. One thing we didn’t like was the unconvincing rhetoric around costs - “we still expect to achieve the large majority of our cost-out ambition by the end of FY25,” and it was this that led us to say, when the stock was trading around $3.80 that “We can see TLS testing its 2022 swing low in the coming months.” – not a big call at the time.

Telstra Group Ltd (TLS) $3.78

Telstra’s 1H24 result was a slight miss, while FY24 guidance was updated towards the lower end of prior guidance. Hence, the stock has drifted lower over recent weeks. Also, TLS is regarded as a defensive stock, and as markets post fresh all-time highs, we are currently in a more “risk-on” environment which doesn’t help the telcos' relative performance. However, the dividend was lifted to 9c, putting the stock on a yield close to 5%.

Telstra (TLS) $3.90

TLS -2.26%: 1H24 result was a shade light on while guidance for the FY24 narrowed but to the lower end of prior guidance. This all-important dividend increased to 9cps. Total income of $11.7bn vs consensus of $11.8bn, EBITDA $4.016bn vs est of $4.053bn and reported profit (NPAT) of $964m was inline.

Telstra (TLS) $4.02

If the collective of analysts (consensus) proves correct, Telstra is set to grow its profits by 8-9% pa for the next 3 years, leading to higher dividends and likely a higher share price. Several factors will drive the growth, but primarily, it’s mobile business, which is tracking at high single-digit growth with looming price rises (inflation-linked), set to benefit the Telco during 2H24.

Xero Ltd (XRO) v Telstra Group Ltd (TLS)

XRO has enjoyed a solid 2023, advancing +45% year-to-date, but the last few months have proved disappointing as the stocks corrected 20% following a soft report recently. We like the online accounting business, but valuation is always a concern, especially if/when we enter a risk-off period for equities.

Telstra Group Ltd (TLS) $3.82

TLS held its investor day last week, and we heard nothing to change our confident mid-term outlook for TLS's growth drivers, which could help underpin the above-mentioned dividend from 18c in FY24 towards 23c by FY26. This increase will largely be driven by growth in its CPI-linked businesses, which constitute 86% of earnings (EBITDA), i.e. Mobile services revenue, InfraCo Fixed and Amplitel. On a side note, their power bill increased by $100m, it's not just you and I turning off the lights more and more!

Telstra Group Ltd (TLS) $3.78

TLS has now corrected over -15% from its June high, putting the stock on an estimated 4.8% fully franked yield over the next 12 months. Nothing new to add to the company, but at current levels, TLS is looking like a high-yielding defensive play with some upside in price, a great combination in today's market.
