TLS delivered a solid FY24 report in August and a mild upgrade to FY25 earnings guidance, helped by price increases across its mobile services, a consumer staple these days. The leading Australian telco has embarked on huge job cuts, with 2,800 announced in May, to lift profits—great for shareholders but, as we found, not service. The telco confirmed in August that it scrapped plans to create an energy business selling power plans as it focuses on its proverbial knitting.

According to the UBS Evidence Lab, which conducts consumer research, its findings suggest that overall churn intentions across the industry remain stable (and low) despite consumers expecting to continue to pay more for telco products. They also think that higher churn is more likely in the more price-sensitive areas of the market, which is not the typical TLS customer.

A mixed update from TLS yesterday with a few moving parts; Most of their divisions are performing well, and while the current 18cps dividend looks safe, there are some question marks over growth in earnings and dividends in the next couple of years due to weakness in their enterprise business. This area focuses on providing telecommunications and technology solutions tailored for large organisations and government bodies, and this is struggling, forcing TLS to cut its cost base costing them $200-250m over the next 2 years in one-off restructuring charges.

Telstra Group Ltd (TLS) $3.67

TLS edged lower yesterday, making fresh multi-month lows while declining to 7% year-to-date. Its 1H24 result was okay, although guidance was updated towards the lower end of previous range. One thing we didn’t like was the unconvincing rhetoric around costs - “we still expect to achieve the large majority of our cost-out ambition by the end of FY25,” and it was this that led us to say, when the stock was trading around $3.80 that “We can see TLS testing its 2022 swing low in the coming months.” – not a big call at the time.

Telstra Group Ltd (TLS) $3.78

Telstra’s 1H24 result was a slight miss, while FY24 guidance was updated towards the lower end of prior guidance. Hence, the stock has drifted lower over recent weeks. Also, TLS is regarded as a defensive stock, and as markets post fresh all-time highs, we are currently in a more “risk-on” environment which doesn’t help the telcos' relative performance. However, the dividend was lifted to 9c, putting the stock on a yield close to 5%.

TLS -2.26%: 1H24 result was a shade light on while guidance for the FY24 narrowed but to the lower end of prior guidance. This all-important dividend increased to 9cps.   Total income of $11.7bn vs consensus of $11.8bn, EBITDA $4.016bn vs est of $4.053bn and reported profit (NPAT) of $964m was inline.

If the collective of analysts (consensus) proves correct, Telstra is set to grow its profits by 8-9% pa for the next 3 years, leading to higher dividends and likely a higher share price. Several factors will drive the growth, but primarily, it’s mobile business, which is tracking at high single-digit growth with looming price rises (inflation-linked), set to benefit the Telco during 2H24.
