LOV -0.87%: jewellery retailer Lovisa finished lower today in a choppy session as the market digested their first-half result. Revenue was a 5% beat at $315m while EBIT was a slight miss at $70m vs $71m expected. Margin pressure coming through weighed on the numbers today and concerned the market, particularly given the stock is on over 30x PE on FY23 expectations.

LOV rallied +5.2% yesterday closing within one good day of its all-time high, impressively this is the only main retail stock to be up in 2022 illustrating how not all boats rise/sink as one across a sector. This fashion jeweller and retailer delivered an excellent result back in August with revenue coming in at $459m, up 59% on FY22 while its high gross margins climbed to 78.9% - there was nothing in the result not to like in our opinion.

Emerging Companies Portfolio

The portfolio was up +1.80% in the week, strongly outperforming the S&P/ASX Small Ords index which fell.  Cash in the portfolio is sitting at around 9%. Strength in  Paladin (PDN) +20% and Lovisa Holdings (LOV) +18% drove the performance, more than offsetting weakness in Aussie Broadband (ABB) -15% and EML payments (EML) -9%. The portfolio was also supported by dividends from Bapcor (BAP) and Pinnacle Investment (PNI).

Emerging Companies Portfolio

The portfolio had a solid week up +3.93% outpacing the gain of the market. Cash remains at around 4% but we did make some changes during the week, cutting underperformers to move into some cheap stocks with potential catalysts– St Barbara (SBM) & Lovisa (LOV). Strandline (STA) rallied more than 15% and EML Payments (EML) bounced 10% to lead the portfolio. St Barbara (SBM) & Select Harvests (SHV) both fell more than 5% to be the weakest positions in the portfolio.
