It’s very difficult to run both an insurance business and a bank successfully, while the more economically sensitive bank generally trading on a lower multiple to a pure insurance company, therefore weighing on the share price. We think the spin out of the bank to ANZ made total sense, and we now focus on SUN as a pure insurance business, with up to about $4bn in excess capital to return to shareholders. This may be quantified with the result along with the composition, i.e. a special div vs capital returns and this has the potential to significantly impact the share price.

Suncorp Group Ltd (SUN) $16.21

SUN has shed the burden of its banking arm to ANZ, allowing it to focus on what it does best: insurance. Shedding the load should be an easy transition for SUN, and with margins improving, the stock looks good, having rallied over +18% year-to-date, just like QBE. The stock still looks cheap compared to IAG after the sale of the banking assets. If/when we reconsider the sector, it will be under the MM microscope.

KMD -9.28%: the NZ based retailer slipped to a 9-month low after flagging a soft finish to the 31 July year-end. KMD, which owns Kathmandu and RipCurl, said they expect a record year for sales of $NZ1.1b, up from last year’s $980m but around 5% short of expectations.
