RRL has endured a tough journey post COVID like many in the sector although their recent poor output and cost guidance has exaggerated the move i.e. The outlook for costs was increased by ~18%. We know from our Weekly Q&A that human nature is to try and buy stocks on the cheap often ignoring why they're cheap in the process. This is one such stock in our opinion that until it can turn its operational performance around is no more than a punt.

MM is looking to switch part of our gold exposure from NCM hence when we see fellow gold miner RRL fall -10.8% in one day, while NCM rallies +0.6%, it catches our attention especially when yesterday’s move followed the trend of 2023 which has seen NCM advance +31% while RRL is only up 1.5%.

RRL downgraded production guidance in April which explains the stock’s underperformance compared to its peers. We have been advocating buying gold and respective exposures into pullbacks, but when the decline is a result of operational weakness rather than broader macro-economic factors, we become more cautious. That said, when operational issues get ironed out, these are the stocks that can recover the strongest.
