A higher Beta play on the gold price is RRL, which has rallied since late 2023, and we are targeting ~20% further upside, making entry sub $1.90 very attractive, in our opinion. The stock has been well supported into the sector pullback in 2024 as investors appear to accumulate into dips.

Regis Resources (RRL) $1.50

RRL has endured a tough journey post COVID like many in the sector although their recent poor output and cost guidance has exaggerated the move i.e. The outlook for costs was increased by ~18%. We know from our Weekly Q&A that human nature is to try and buy stocks on the cheap often ignoring why they're cheap in the process. This is one such stock in our opinion that until it can turn its operational performance around is no more than a punt.

MM is looking to switch part of our gold exposure from NCM hence when we see fellow gold miner RRL fall -10.8% in one day, while NCM rallies +0.6%, it catches our attention especially when yesterday’s move followed the trend of 2023 which has seen NCM advance +31% while RRL is only up 1.5%.

RRL downgraded production guidance in April which explains the stock’s underperformance compared to its peers. We have been advocating buying gold and respective exposures into pullbacks, but when the decline is a result of operational weakness rather than broader macro-economic factors, we become more cautious. That said, when operational issues get ironed out, these are the stocks that can recover the strongest.

While a gold price tailwind would certainly support RRL, we have a clear preference for Evolution (EVN) & Northern Star (NST), while we also like St Barbara (SBM) as a higher-risk speculative play. • While RRL will benefit if our positive view on gold transpires, we have a preference for others in the sector.

RRL surged +12.7% as gold came back into vogue with a flurry although we shouldn’t forget how far it has fallen post-Covid as interest rates surged higher. However, we feel as the $US loses its mojo this under-owned and cheap pocket of the market is set to advance strongly and from a risk-reward perspective RRL, and the gold sector in general, looks great.

Emerging Companies Portfolio

The portfolio was off -0.27% in the week against a weak market that fell -1.14%%. Cash remains at around 4% with no changes to the portfolio. Austal (ASB) was the star of the show adding ~30% following a good contract win while Praemium (PPS) +21% and Dubber (DUB) +18.7% bounced strongly. Tyro (TYR) -18.59% and Select Harvest (SHV) -10.44% were the biggest drags.

RRL +10.69%: a record last quarter helped Regis rally today with the gold miner managing its production better than peers in a tough period.
