Nufarm (NUF) $4.73

NUF -7.07%: The volatility continued today for Ag related stocks with Nufarm materially missing expectations at their 1H24 results, while their FY24 earnings guidance was also weak. The stock was hit hard early , down 13.5% at its worst testing its 12-month low in the process, before recouping half of the losses. Once the conference call started though, things improved amid some confidence that this may be the low point emerged.

Nufarm (NUF) is a global pesticide business with a strong local presence, they have endured issues through periods of sustained drought but theoretically will outperform in high yield crop years i.e. similar to IPL it comes with weather risks. The company reports today hence volatility is likely to be elevated as it has been for both IPL and ELD after their respective earnings. The stock closed yesterday within a few cents of its average for the last 3 ½ years hence we see reason to 2nd guess what comes next until we see some meaningful direction from the company.

Nufarm Ltd (NUF) $4.59

Yesterday saw NUF’s stock plunge 8.57% making it the worst performer in the ASX200, the Agribusiness released its annual results and while it may have grown revenue it suffered because of rising freight and storage costs. Most importantly it cautioned investors that the rising costs of materials and supply chain issues would damage margins however they do have the ability to hike prices to maintain profitability.

Nufarm (NUF) $4.34

Manufacturer of seed and crop protection products NUF has struggled for the last 4-years and buying current weakness makes me think of “catching the falling knife”, historically an excellent way to lose money. The company lost ~$80m in FY20 and while it’s tipped to return to profitability in FY21 to the tune of $61m, the markets clearly not a believer and ”fighting the tape” can be dangerous, especially with stocks in pronounced downtrends.
