NHF rallied 6.3% on Thursday, dragged higher by bullish sentiment towards MPL and their announced +5.8% premium hike starting in April.
NHF +12.46%: Delivered better-than-expected results as Australian Residents Health Insurance (ARHI) margins exceeded expectations, with earnings guidance of $235-$250m maintained for the full-year.
NHF advanced +2.5% on Thursday following the news that a surprising number of young people are taking up private health insurance despite the risks of the cost-of-living crisis pushing patients into the public sector. Official data released on Thursday showed that more than 15 million Australians now have private health cover following a 5% increase in Australians aged in their 20s taking out hospital cover in the quarter.
NHF delivered a mixed 1H24 result last month, with mixed quality and slowing sales momentum. This led to some downgrades and an initial subsequent sharp fall in the stock, most of which has now been recouped.
NHF has struggled through 2023, with the stock down -3.6% year-to-date. At this month's AGM, their overall volume and topline momentum were generally upbeat, but no details were provided on claims costs and margin performance, and as we know, markets hate uncertainty, tending to assume the worst when information is not forthcoming
NHF is the 4th largest private health business in Australia covering both residents and also international students and workers – a larger population equals more potential customers. Revenues and margins declined during COVID, both are now rebounding rapidly, and we see upside risk to consensus if the company can achieve a full normalisation of volumes and margins.
NIB has rallied to fresh all-time highs this month with the sharp sell-off following its disappointing earnings report in Q1 a distant memory. The stock has been strongly re-rated on the upside over recent months due to the positive combination of strong migration trends and low claims. The stock isn’t cheap trading on an Est. 21.6x valuation for FY23 but history tells us that buying stocks with strong momentum often makes sense.
NHF rallied +2.9% on Monday posting fresh all-time highs in the process, February’s sharp sell-off following its disappointing earnings report has become a distant memory i.e. a ¬5% miss due to soft margins.
CBA has dragged the Banking Sector lower this month after disappointing the market last week, similarly, NHF was clobbered -11.6% yesterday following its earnings report, testing below last year’s $150m equity raise price in the process.
NIB Holdings (NHF) fell -11.98% yesterday following a $150m equity raise at $6.90, the stock closed ~4% below the placement price which wouldn’t cheer the fund managers who often enjoy easy pickings from capital raisings. The raise is to fund acquisitions with the first company on the menu being Maple Plan as the health insurer looks to enter into Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme Sector.

NIB Holdings is Australia's fourth-largest health fund. It is a national provider of private health insurance, life insurance, travel insurance, and related healthcare services, with a growing presence in New Zealand. Approximately 55% of the population is covered by private health insurance because of taxation benefits, shorter wait times, a choice of doctor and hospital, and cover of ancillary health services.
