ANN was the best performer of the major healthcare names yesterday, and although the +2.8% rise wasn’t vaguely as dramatic as the crash by NAN, it was another example of an underperformer over recent years attracting some buying. The company downgraded mid-last year, compounding similar moves in 2022 and until they start delivering buying feels like “bottom picking” for the sake of it.

ANN fell over -14% on Tuesday following a downgrade that took the stock to fresh  12-month lows, the downside momentum is looking likely to test/break its 2022 low which begs the question of where or if MM now have interest in ANN. The market has been aware of the company’s excess inventory issues for a while with customers no longer feeling the need to overstock protective products as COVID becomes a distant memory.

ANN was the best-performing healthcare name yesterday gaining +1.5% although it remains well below its pre-COVID levels, not a good result for a health and safety business. Unpredictable supply/demand dynamics have weighed on ANN, and visibility of inventory in the onward value chain is still low which has left the market cautious toward further negative surprises, but with that comes potential value.

ANN has halved from its mid-2021 high when in the middle of the pandemic most people thought we would be wearing rubber gloves for the rest of our lives, however, the disappointing factor is the stock is now trading below its pre-Covid levels even as we have become a more sanitised and health conscious society. As we saw with HLS earlier this year we saw earnings downgrades as rising costs flowed down to decreasing margins, as we often say MM aren’t fans of companies who cannot rally on good news and that’s very much been the case with ANN over the last 2-years. • We feel the stock is reasonably priced trading on an Est. 15.5x earnings for 2022 but to entice MM we want to see some operational improvements dropping down to expansion in margins.
