CKF -4.29% had a tough time today after a softer than expected 1st half FY25 result.
CKF -12.93% following a trading update when CKF said in the first 16 weeks of FY25 (to 18 August 2024), total sales had grown by 1.1%. However, the profit benefit of higher sales was more than offset by the impact of persistent inflation on its cost of sales, labour and energy. For the first 16 weeks of the FY25, the total company sales of the KFC operator grew by only 1.1% over the prior corresponding period.
CKF owns KFC and Taco Bell franchises, which will compete with the freshly listed Guzma Y Gomez (GYG). Not only are we seeing increased competition in the space, but as we touched on, demand per capita may slip, although population growth is a positive tailwind. We discussed CKF in June, concluding we were neutral around $9. This stance hasn’t changed, and if anything we are on the bearish side of the ledger.
CKF owns KFC and Taco Bell franchises, which will compete with GYG. However, it didn’t enjoy any residual buying from the phenomenal IPO on Thursday, with the stock remaining close to its 2024 low, down over 20% year-to-date. In its FY24 first-half result, CKF demonstrated KFC Australia SSS (same-store sales) growth of 6.6% and KFC Europe SSS growth of 8.8%.
KFC and Taco Bell franchise owner CKF is up +36% year-to-date aided by a beat on FY23 earnings in June, with revenue up 14% to $1.35bn and NPAT of $51.9mn around 8% better than expected as unlike many businesses
CKF +17.68%: the owner of KFC and Taco Bell franchises rallied to a 6-month high today following a beat on FY23 results released this morning. Revenue was up 14% to $1.35b, though Net Profit After Tax (NPAT) fell to $51.9m. Despite this, the fall was better than feared, coming in around ~8% above consensus expectations.
CKF is the largest KFC franchisee in Australia, with over 228 outlets plus the company is rolling out KFCs across Germany and the Netherlands, it has also entered into a development agreement to build 50 Taco Bell restaurants over the next 3 years in QLD, WA and VIC.
CKF has endured a tough 18 months basically halving in price as the operator of KFC and Taco Bell in Australia, Germany, and the Netherlands failed to meet earnings expectations, especially in late 2022 following the company’s half-year result – the largest issue was management flagging that rising inflation was likely to pressure margins through 2023. However, it was encouraging to see insiders buying, 4 directors bought parcels in the $40k-$80 region, better than the other side of the ledger – insiders now own over 8% of CKF.
Last Saturday we discussed CKF following a subscribers question, our conclusion was fairly straightforward but last week’s price action reiterates a current market characteristic that’s been fairly dominant throughout 2022:
CKF +11.52%: Full-year results out for the KFC franchise owner today were impressive despite what was largely expected to be a soft period. Revenue was a slight beat at $1.18b, but NPAT was around 5% ahead of expectations and up 68% in the year. Same-store sales growth was strong across the board for KFC Australia (+1.4%) and Europe (~17%), though the junior Taco Bell segment saw negative comps. Margins were solid...

Collins Foods is an operator of quick service restaurants, or QSRs. It franchises restaurant brands from US-listed Yum Brands, including KFC in Australia, Germany, and the Netherlands. Revenue and earnings are largely generated in Australia, where Collins is the largest KFC franchisee. Earnings growth is underpinned by its store network expansion, both new restaurants and acquisitions of existing sites. Competitive pricing is key to maintaining share in the QSR market, and the company has generally increased at or below consumer price index growth.
