MM likes NST into weakness towards $8

OPINION

Northern Star Resources Ltd (NST) $8.57

MM exited NST above $10 back in March, the move didn’t look good for a few weeks but it’s a different story today, in hindsight I wish we had trimmed our Newcrest (NCM) position at the same time – NST has corrected -28% and NCM -16%. We now like both stocks at current levels, in line with our view on yields and the $US, although we are unlikely to increase our already solid 5% position in NCM.

The MM Growth Portfolio was up  +1.4% last week while the market fell -0.4% inclusive of dividends, performance was aided by strong moves in HUB24 (HUB) +13.9%, Whitehaven Coal (WHC) +12% and Altium (ALU) +6.2% while the major performance drags were Appen (APX) -23.2% and Virgin Money (VUK) -8.6%. For the month of February the portfolio was up +2.10%, largely inline with the market. Interestingly enough, Aussie stocks...

We increased our gold exposure in late 2021 through NST which so far has only trod water although plenty of other stocks / sectors have been hammered in the markets elevated volatility in 2022. At this stage we’re looking for a another 10-15% upside where we are likely to lighten our gold exposure.

The MM Growth Portfolio slipped 1.18% last week as the Ukraine tensions caused markets to de-risk across the board, our growth names suffered the most including Xero (XRO) -9.6% & Altium (ALU) -7.2% while Virgin Money (VUK) also surrendered some its recent gains on European fears falling -6.7%. Elsewhere the defensive and recovery names stood out on...

We’ve discussed the gold stocks a few times of late but we finally saw some love for the sector yesterday as Ukraine tensions rise plus I expect plenty of traders are caught short precious metals in anticipation of rising interest rates. We are probably more overweight the sector than we would choose after its lacklustre start to 2022 but we still see at least 20% upside from current levels, hence we will remain patiently long for now.

NST like NCM has embraced all the bad news on the bond yield front while largely ignoring the price of gold. The chart patterns of NCM and NST are almost perfect overlays as the influence of gold ETF’s is very evident – the good news is we are getting some strong contrarian buy signals from the gold ETF’s as investors have abandoned the space as bond yields increase.

With the $US struggling and bond yields starting to drift we like our overweight gold exposure through NST and Newcrest Mining (NCM) unfortunately just not our entry levels. However when we are carrying such positions obviously its prudent to have an exit game plan, the first part of the puzzle will be to evaluate how the stocks react to the macro shift...
