COL +5.48%: a good 1H from Coles, they looked to have edged Woolworths in the half on the back of a strong Supermarkets performance. EBIT at $1,064m was  ~5% beat mostly on the back of a better-than-expected margin out of Supermarkets.

Supermarket giant  COL is enjoying a strong 2023 helped by its first-half numbers which beat consensus in February, earnings (EBIT) jumped 14% to $1114m, 9% above consensus. The beat was driven by a strong supermarket outcome which saw gross margins up 43bps, the sector has returned to growth since the turn of the new year which supports a reasonable set-up to meet market expectations for the 2H although recent wage hikes will be a headwind moving forward.

The two major supermarkets have reported quarterly sales updates this week at a time when Woolworths (WOW) is trading just ~10% below its all-time high while Coles (COL) is only ~8% below their equivalent milestone. Both reported strong results with WOW booking like-for-like sales growth for the 3 months to March 31 of 7.6%% while Coles (COL) said +6.5% more sales went through their tills.

The likes of Woolworths (WOW) and Coles (COL) are probably the best examples of “recession-proof businesses” and during tougher economic climates, these stocks are generally more stable although when the market gets re-rated lower they are likely to follow suit but in a more subdued manner. COL delivered a disappointing sales update in late October but as supply chain and labour issues start to improve we believe the large supermarkets will follow suit. • We like COL into dips under $18 – an estimated 33c fully franked dividend will appeal to yield-hungry investors.
