Worley Ltd (WOR) v Woodside Energy (WDS)

The correlation between WOR and WDS has been very close post-COVID, apart from over recent months where WOR has proved a big winner; year-to-date, WOR is up +14.1% while WDS has fallen -10.4%. We are in no hurry to consider switching our WOR holding into WDS, but another 10% differential might create some temptation.

Woodside Energy Group (WDS) $33.85

The Energy Sector fell -2% on Thursday as the oil price slipped back towards $US84, even while a resolution in the Middle East appears a long way off. Woodside (WDS) has already slipped ~13% from the swing high posted after Hamas invaded Israel. For now, we are happy sitting on the sidelines, but we will be on the lookout for a pickup in strength, ideally around $30 or 10% lower.

Woodside Group (WDS) v Goodman Group (GMG)

The Energy Sector and oil prices have both failed to post recent highs even as the Israel-Hamas conflict continues to dominate the news, not a fresh concern for MM, but one that has been percolating for a few weeks. The reason for our position in WDS has largely gone, and with no dividend in the coming months, we question why MM is still holding the stock. We are showing a +3.7% paper profit in WDS before this morning's opening.

Woodside Energy Group (WDS) $36.88

WDS rallied +2.2% on Wednesday as crude oil advanced ~3%, taking it within striking distance of fresh 2023 highs, now around 5% higher. While we are still considering taking profit on our WDS position, a test of $40 remains a strong possibility, i.e. we are remaining patient at this stage.

Woodside Energy Group Ltd (WDS) $35.24

WDS rallied +3.1% on Monday, but it remains significantly below its recent highs as it follows any dips in crude oil with more gusto than advances. WDS is reasonably priced and set to yield strongly into 2024; hence, while MM are more likely to sell strength as opposed to buying weakness, we are likely to remain relatively pedantic with our exit level.

Woodside Energy Group Ltd (WDS) $37.84

Even after taking into account last month's $1.24 fully franked dividend, WDS has started to look tired around the $38 area even as crude oil continues to post new 12-month highs, over 10% higher than when WDS first tested $38 this year. We remain bullish on the Energy Sector, but it is starting to feel like a crowded trade as crude pushes ever higher.

WDS has enjoyed a solid recovery from its March low, when it traded ex-dividend $US1.44 fully franked, but unlike its overseas peers it remains below its 2022 high with its cause not helped by recent policy intervention pushing some Japanese companies to seek more diversified supply from the Middle East.
