Woolworths Group Ltd (WOW) $33.43

WOW made fresh 4-year lows in May following a soft 3Q sales update but its subsequently bounced over 10% as the bargain hunters entered the fray helped by the ASX edging towards fresh highs. Woolies doesn’t feel cheap trading at current levels considering the ACCC risks into 2025 and we see no reason to chase the current rebound in the stock.

WOW -4.15%: 3Q sales update from the supermarket giant was below expectations, and highlighted how strong a quarter Coles (COL) had who posted an update earlier this week seeing WOW shares to ~4 year lows. Food sales growth of just 1.1% on a like-for-like basis was around half that of expectations while inflation was negative (-0.2%) for the third quarter.

At the same time, the company has experienced leadership turmoil, which has seen the market lose confidence in the household name and CEO Brad Banducci eventually lose his job; however, lows are formed when things look their worst. New CEO Amanda Bardwell may have inherited WOW at a good time to turn the company’s fortunes around. Their 1H24 result in February was a disappointment, and the stock hasn’t recovered since.
