AMP Ltd (AMP) 95c

AMP needs no introduction; it’s been a horror story for Australian investors for years, bar the occasional sharp bounce, e.g. 65% in 2022. Last year, the company tried to hide lower margins with the announcement of a new Digital Bank as the company shot itself in the foot one more time.

AMP tumbled -15.8% to fresh multi-year lows on Thursday after trying to hide lower margin expectations with the announcement of a new Digital Bank, not the sort of behaviour required by a company that’s been in the “naughty corner” for over 15 years. They should address investor concerns and not gloss over issues like tight margins through FY23 and into 2024.

A number of financial advisers have taken the company to court in a class action after AMP reduced the multiple it paid advisors for their business.

AMP received a failed takeover offer from US firm ARES Management back in late 2020, at the time the non-binding agreement was at an implied value of $1.85 with history telling us they should have tried to take the money that week! Less than 6 months later ARES pulled their generous bid and unfortunately, the rest is history. AMP has since consolidated its diversified financial business but we see value finally emerging after years of issues.

Many would argue that AMP is back where it belongs in the “naughty corner” having already plunged -21.3% this year following last month’s result which fell well short of expectations. Natural outflows fell from more than $5bn to $2.9bn in 2022, perhaps a decent trend to the turnaround optimists but not an exciting business to traditional investors – “we’re losing fewer customers but it’s hard work” very average rhetoric in our opinion.
