BOE has underperformed as it commissions the Honeymoon project. That is not a significant surprise, and BOE has been our least preferred company in the sector for most of the past year. It is still not cheap relative to peers, and we would prefer Peninsula Energy (PEN), at the speculative end of the curve, which provides a similar exposure for a fraction of the price.

The average gain of the three ASX200 uranium miners on Wednesday was almost 6%, with BOE, the weakest advancing +4.75%—not bad for a relatively average performer. We had been calling BOE down to the $4 area for months, a move which unfolded rapidly after the CEO  sold around 70% of his holding in one fell swoop in late May.

We haven’t been fans of BOE through 2024 and in May it looked like the CEO agreed as he unloaded 70% of his holding onto the market, not a great look. This is a volatile space but we’ve been targeting the $4 area for BOE hence we have reversed our outlook back to a bullish one, though we reiterate our preference towards PDN for sector exposure.

Boss Energy (BOE) $4.04

MM has been targeting the $4 area for BOE for weeks, and yesterday's 5.2% sell-off took the stock back to the psychological level. The CEO's recent aggressive sell-down of 70% of his holding along with softening Spot Uranium prices brought the move to fruition. Importantly, the 35% retracement in the stock should remind investors of the volatility of the stock/sector; hence, we take smaller positions when we go long these sorts of companies.

First Up

The questions ran hot yesterday around Boss Energy (BOE), even after we touched on the leading ASX uranium stocks on Tuesday following the news that the company CEO had sold over 70% of his shares in the uranium miner. Also, for good measure, the Chairman and another director also sold smaller parcels of stock. We can see the logic in taking some $$ off the table after the stock/sector's great run in recent years, but all things being equal, they clearly don’t believe it's going to double again anytime soon.

BOE has been one of the market's favourite investments in the uranium sector over the past three years and is now a member of the ASX200. We like it, particularly given their mine is in Australia, however, we struggle to justify the current share price just on the company’s Honeymoon project, believing this ship has largely sailed – we would be interested closer to $4.

Boss Energy Ltd (BOE) $4.50

BOE fell -3.4% on Wednesday, making it the standout loser in the main Energy Sector. We’ve preferred Paladin (currently trading under a deferred settlement code PDNDA) for exposure to uranium, and that’s proven on point through 2024, with BOE up +13% compared to PDNDA, which has soared +47%. We are looking to increase our uranium exposure into pullbacks, but if we are correct and BOE can drop another 10%, then Paladin is likely to follow.

First Up

Earlier this month, the Uranium Sector was one of the hottest in town, with Paladin (PDN) and Boss Energy (BOE) both up ~50% after only a few weeks of 2024, but here we are approaching the end of February, and the vast majority of the gains have evaporated in the blink of an eye. US giant Cameco Corp (CCJ US) was the catalyst after reporting its FY23 results earlier in the month.
