The QRE ETF has corrected by 15% over the past few weeks from its June high, and we would say it’s now in an optimal accumulation phase for investors who don’t want to run the gauntlet of earnings misses, operational issues, etc. However, with the ETF holding ~15% in energy and utilities stocks, we still think picking individual stocks is a better way to go for the moves that we’re targeting.
The QRE holds all of the “hot” stocks of the last six months, from gold to copper and large diversified names, hence its stellar performance this FY. However, at this stage of the cycle, we believe some consolidation is likely following the 70% almost uninterrupted rally from its April low.
This QRE is made up of all the likely names, although ~11% is oil & gas, but this hasn’t managed to rein in the ETF's stellar performance since April 2024, helped by gold and copper stocks exerting an increasing influence as they surge ever higher. At this stage of the cycle, we see no reason to fight the trend, believing the ETF can add to its +70% advance, but if we are correct around gold, for example, some consolidation is likely in this FY.
The QRE is made up of the likely resource names, along with ~12% in oil & gas but this hasn’t managed to rein in the ETF's stellar performance since April, with gold and copper stocks exerting an increasing influence as they surge ever higher. At this stage of the cycle, we see no reason to fight the trend, believing the ETF can add to its +53% advance, but if we are correct around gold, for example, some consolidation is likely into early 2026.
There are currently two bullish open trade ideas:
Long the Global X Battery Tech & Lithium ETF (ACDC) at $91.25 with stops at $89.85.
Long the QRE ETF at $6.70 with stops at $6.70.
Following on from recent reports we are looking for the resources sector to add to last week's glimmer of performance catch-up. In line with the weak S&P 500 futures opening this morning, we are looking to buy into an early morning minor pullback.
The QRE ETF aims to track the ASX200’s Resources index. Of forty-seven stocks held, the largest five holdings are BHP 35.5%, WDS 9.1%, RIO 8.1%, NST 5.4%, and FMG 5.1% and with plenty of smaller positions in the mix, but notably around half are in iron ore facing stocks. From a sector perspective, its main positions are 71% in mining and 16% in oil & gas.
The Materials Index closed up +0.96% on Thursday, it has remained subdued primarily on China's economic worries, but with iron ore forging above $US120/mt, we remain increasingly bullish towards the world's 2nd largest economy and, by definition, the Australian miners – nothing new there.
The ASX200 again recovered from early weakness to close up +0.2% although we still saw more stocks decline led by the Energy Sector although the market appears to have got this one wrong following crude oils pop over $US91/barrel last night. This morning may see many short-term players hang on the sidelines ahead of this month's important inflation data out of the US.
