Last week’s Bank of Americas Fund Managers Survey showed the market is the most bullish in over two years on the back of the biggest jump in global growth optimism since May 2022 – allocations to stocks and commodities hit a 27-month high, at the expense of bonds, with cash levels falling to 4.2% from 4.4% in the previous month - just shy of the sub-4% level that traditionally signals a contrarian sell indicator for equities according to the BofA Global FMS Cash Rule. Conversely, an increasing number of fund managers now believe gold is the most overpriced since COVID. The most crowded trade recognized by fund managers continues to be the "Long Magnificent 7.” Overall, last week was not the best time for Fund managers!

A mixed session in the US overnight, with the Dow edging marginally lower while the tech-based NASDAQ gained +0.4% ahead of tomorrow's key inflation data. The CPI print will likely have a major bearing on the markets' “best guess” for when the Fed will start cutting rates with a stronger-than-expected number, a potential catalyst to trigger a pullback in stocks. The consensus is for CPI to print 3.4% YoY, or stripping out the more volatile food and energy components, 3.7%.

US indices delivered a similar session overnight as the ASX on Tuesday, with advances during the day encountering afternoon selling, or as we called it, book-squaring. This happens when stocks have strongly outperformed bonds during a reporting period, forcing multi asset manager to sell equities and buy bonds to get their asset allocation in line before quarter end.

US stocks advanced last night as the influential tech sector found some buying after a few weak sessions. Outside of GOOGL/AAPL mentioned earlier, we also saw Meta Platforms (META US), Netflix (NFLX US), and Tesla (TSLA US) advance over 2%, with the volatile car maker putting on over 6%.

The ASX200 has rallied to be within 2% of the psychological 8000 level, and we would already be well above it if the influential Resources Sector could regain its mojo. The much-lauded Tech Sector was only the market's fourth best last week, coming in behind the Financials, Real Estate and Healthcare Sectors as the buying became more broad-based. Last month’s Bank of America Fund Managers Survey told us the market was long & bullish, with tech stocks still the top pick.

US indices fell for a second day as profit-taking washed through the “Magnificent Seven”; the NASDAQ closed down -1.8% while the Russell 2000 (small cap) index fared better, finishing down just -1%. Apple Inc (AAPL US) tumbled 2.8% after reports that iPhone Sales had plunged 24% in China, while Tesla (TSLA US) -3.9% and Microsoft (MSFT US) -3% also struggled, both actually underperforming Apple.

US stocks edged higher overnight in a very quiet session for reporting season; the S&P500 hovered around the psychological 5000 area after making fresh highs the previous session. Equities have advanced on strong economic data and solid earnings, but after the solid gains over recent months, the big question is whether the market requires fresh fuel to extend the move. Chip maker Arm Holdings (ARM US) surged ~50% after a strong sales outlook and bullish forecast fuelled hopes that AI and tech will keep lifting the market, while Uranium company Cameco (CCJ US) fell ~7% after releasing their quarterly update.

US stocks bounced overnight, with the S&P500 and NASDAQ 100 both closing up well over 1%. The “Magnificent Seven” advanced after early wobbles this week, while the Energy Sector fell over -2% in line with a drop in the oil price and economically sensitive commodities. Bond yields edged lower, especially the long end of the curve (10 years down 4bps), with plenty of water still to go under the bridge in terms of when and how fast the Fed will start cutting interest rates, much of which will flow into stock market volatility.

US stocks closed mixed overnight with the tech-based NASDAQ the standout closing up +0.8% led by a +12% surge by Netflix (NFLX US) following a solid result, but all indices closed well off their highs after the S&P500 earlier hit another record high, for the 3rd time in 4 sessions, helped by Microsoft (MSFT US) early advance taking its valuation in excess of $US3 trillion as the tech/AI stocks keep driving the market higher.

US stocks rallied overnight, led by a +3.3% pop by heavyweight and influential Apple Inc (AAPL US), the move helped the tech-based NASDAQ nudge fresh all-time highs – an impressive move as bond markets rein in their dovish bets for 2024. However, with the Presidential election looming in November the Fed may want to get on the front foot to allow politics to run its own race, an interesting quandary.
