Amazon.com Inc (AMZN US) $US132.71

Last week saw AMZN report better-than-expected 3rd quarter earnings, with revenue increasing +13%, illustrating the resilience of the US consumer. Understandably, the company was cautious with its 4th quarter forecast – for the 3rd quarter, EPS came in at 94c v 58c expected by LSEG while revenue of $US143.1bn beat estimates of $US141.4bn.

It was interesting overnight to see Amazon rally +1.7% after the online retailer announced it plans to invest up to $4 billion into artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, it appears the AI boom has much further to play out.

Jeff Bezos’s online retailing giant caught the headlines for the wrong reasons overnight, falling over -4.4%, making it the worst of the major tech names on our Watchlist. We aren’t reading too much into this pullback, believing it was more a function of this month's strength, allowing “weak longs” the opportunity to lock in some profits.

US stocks surged higher overnight led by the reinvigorated Tech Sector following strong earnings e.g. Amazon.com, the world’s largest retailer, closed up +4.6% following a profit result that showed the great combination of successful cost-cutting and strong sales with 1st quarter revenue up +9.4% to $US127.4bn.

International Equities Portfolio

The MM International Equities Portfolio fell -7.2% during the week with cash remaining at 8%. Trade Desk (TTD US) was whacked -26% and JD.com -15.6% while Brunswick (BC US) advancing just +0.5% was, unfortunately, the only green across our portfolio. While this portfolio is filled with high-quality companies, a number of these have fallen substantially this year dragging performance with them. In hindsight...

Amazon has been clobbered over the last few weeks following its latest earnings report taking the shares down to levels not seen since mid-2020 i.e. the “buy the dip” attitude has clearly waned towards growth stocks. Unlike Netflix (NFLX US) which is facing serious risks to its business model AMZN experienced some weak e-commerce results in the short term but one quarter doesn’t set a trend. International Equities Portfolio

The MM International Equities Portfolio added 3.75% during the week with cash at 8%. Amazon.com (AMZN US) falling -9.8% was the only negative, in the winners circle we saw Tencent (700 HK) +14.4%, JD.com (JD US) +18.2% and Alibaba (BABA US) +20.9% - overall a solid set of numbers.

International Equities Portfolio

The MM International Equities portfolio fell -6.7% last week while cash sits at 8%. Every stock in the portfolio was down, the worst performers were PayPal (PYPL US) -16.6%, Glencore (GLEN US) -11.6% and Amazon.com (AMZN US) -8.9% while Brunswick Corp (BC US) was our best performer and it still fell -1.8%.

The portfolio added +1.71% for the week while cash sits at 8%. Our most recent purchase of Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG US) did well up 6.87% while Amazon (AMZN US) +5.23% & Brunswick (BC US) +4.94% more than offset weakness in PayPal (PYPL US) -3.90%.
