In April, META was hammered after forecasting higher expenses and lighter-than-expected revenue in its quarterly result. Still, the stock has regained its mojo since bouncing back within striking distance of its all-time high. While META is an impressive business, it is one we feel is maturing. Many younger people no longer use its traditional platform, and we can see growth becoming harder and more expensive; hence, it's not our favourite amongst the US “Super Six.”

META ended down -10.6% overnight, at one stage plunging up to 16% in premarket trading after the Facebook parent forecasted higher expenses and lighter-than-expected revenue in its quarterly result—not a great combination. The issue was all in the guidance, as it actually enjoyed a strong 1Q, with a beat in both the top and bottom lines. Revenue was 1% higher than consensus at $36.46 billion, up 27% year-on-year - the highest year-on-year (YoY) growth since 3Q 2021. Also, Earnings per share (EPS) beat expectations by 9.8%, coming in at $4.71 and up more than two-fold from the $2.20 a year ago. Unfortunately, the market expected more from Meta regarding its forward sales outlook.

Meta Platforms Inc (META US) $US499.53

The old Facebook rallied over 3% overnight as it continues to outperform, supported by its strong earnings report delivered early last month when it announced its inaugural dividend – sales jumped 25% over the year with EPS of $5.33, well above the $4.96 expected. This stellar result has taken the stock above $US500, but we feel another period of consolidation, as we saw in 2H of 2023, is close at hand – another stock we would put in the “buy the dip” bucket.

First Up

Last week saw the US S&P500 close at its 4th consecutive fresh weekly high on strong tech earnings and a solid jobs report on Friday, illustrating the underlying strength of the American economy. Bond yields had driven equities post-COVID, but US earnings season became the new driving factor last week, no real surprise by the baton change on the stock level, but the moves have been extraordinary, propelling US indices higher, e.g. Facebook-parent Meta’s +20% surge on Friday made Zuckerburg over $US28bn in one day, a rare move for a stock of this magnitude.
