Meta Platforms Inc (META US) $US441.38

META ended down -10.6% overnight, at one stage plunging up to 16% in premarket trading after the Facebook parent forecasted higher expenses and lighter-than-expected revenue in its quarterly result—not a great combination. The issue was all in the guidance, as it actually enjoyed a strong 1Q, with a beat in both the top and bottom lines. Revenue was 1% higher than consensus at $36.46 billion, up 27% year-on-year - the highest year-on-year (YoY) growth since 3Q 2021. Also, Earnings per share (EPS) beat expectations by 9.8%, coming in at $4.71 and up more than two-fold from the $2.20 a year ago. Unfortunately, the market expected more from Meta regarding its forward sales outlook.

Meta Platforms Inc (META US) $US499.53

The old Facebook rallied over 3% overnight as it continues to outperform, supported by its strong earnings report delivered early last month when it announced its inaugural dividend – sales jumped 25% over the year with EPS of $5.33, well above the $4.96 expected. This stellar result has taken the stock above $US500, but we feel another period of consolidation, as we saw in 2H of 2023, is close at hand – another stock we would put in the “buy the dip” bucket.

First Up

Last week saw the US S&P500 close at its 4th consecutive fresh weekly high on strong tech earnings and a solid jobs report on Friday, illustrating the underlying strength of the American economy. Bond yields had driven equities post-COVID, but US earnings season became the new driving factor last week, no real surprise by the baton change on the stock level, but the moves have been extraordinary, propelling US indices higher, e.g. Facebook-parent Meta’s +20% surge on Friday made Zuckerburg over $US28bn in one day, a rare move for a stock of this magnitude.

Overnight, US stocks eked out small gains in a relatively quiet session compared to the last week. A solid performance, in our opinion, following the market's best week of 2023, the NASDAQ has spent plenty of time rotating around the 15,000 area over recent months, and we envisage more of the same before the next bullish catalyst sends stocks higher – Fed Chair Jerome Powell is set to speak twice in the coming days.

The old Facebook is not one of our favourites in the group but it does look the most capable of an aggressive short-squeeze over the coming weeks helped by its painful 60% plunge from its late 2021 high – one for the short-term traders in our opinion.

Facebook as most of us still refer to Meta Platforms has been hammered more than 55% over the last year on concerns around both growth and valuation – a common sector theme in 2022. However its recent report in April surprised the bears by managing to demonstrate user growth when the stock was being priced for contraction, we can see 20% upside from current levels.

After market this morning we saw Facebook, as its still largely referred to, rally +12% following its first quarter report, the catalyst was the return to user growth which wasn’t anticipated by the market as users flock to younger sites like TikTok. Revenue also jumped 6.6% to $US27.9bn for the Facebook parent which has seen its stock more than halve this year – we expect a sharp countertrend...

The old Facebook was crushed over 26% last night after it delivered a disappointing earnings report as user growth appears to have hit a ceiling. The rise of TikTok has been one major headwind and it illustrates the risk to incumbent dominant players in this rapidly evolving space. I’m not a Facebook user and there is a large part of me that hopes it...

Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook (FB US) has now corrected almost 25% from its September high illustrating that the divergence / rotation on the stock and sector level is becoming increasingly pronounced. This is a warning signal that the bull market is maturing, nothing MM hasn’t mentioned over recent months.
