US NASDAQ 100 Index

The NASDAQ bounced well overnight and ended the day down just 1.2%, with several of the “Magnificent Seven” closing higher, including Microsoft, Meta, and Netflix. However, U.S. memory stocks were under the pump, tracking sharp declines in South Korean chipmakers, while Blackstone fell 3.8% after the Financial Times reported $1.7bn in net outflows from one of its private credit funds in the first quarter. There was little place to hide, with gold reversing Monday’s gains and trading sharply lower, as the CBOE Volatility Index, Wall Street’s fear gauge, climbed to its highest level since November.

US NASDAQ 100 Index

Wall Street pared earlier losses as oil reversed gains on signs of progress in US–Iran nuclear talks. Chipmakers led declines after Nvidia’s results failed to reassure investors on the sustainability of AI-driven demand. The Nasdaq 100 underperformed, falling 1.2%, while the S&P 500 edged lower despite the majority of its constituents advancing.

The NASDAQ bounced well in the last few hours overnight to end the day up 1.1% with most of the “Magnificent Seven” contributing to the gain, led by Apple Inc, which closed 2.2% higher. Gains in Advanced Micro Devices and a range of software stocks stood out, as investor concerns around AI-driven disruption eased following Anthropic’s comments and Meta’s announcement of a multi-year partnership with the chipmaker.

The Nasdaq was hit overnight after Cisco Systems plunged 12% as a tepid margin outlook signalled higher memory-chip prices are taking a toll. Most of the megacaps retreated and an ETF tracking software companies slumped more than 3%.

NASDAQ 100 Index

US tech stocks bounced off their lows overnight to finish down 1.2%, after being down ~2% at the lows, extending the pullback to 7.2%, a very similar move to the ASX200. Stocks may have retreated again on Tuesday, with tech shares continuing to retreat on concerns about valuations of AI, but buyers of “risk” returned into weakness with Bitcoin bouncing ~4% after briefly trading below $US90,000, a sign of renewed risk-taking by investors.

We exited the NDQ in late May above $50, intending to re-enter during a pullback this month. The Israel-Iran conflict may have afforded us the opportunity. We like the risk/reward ~3.5% below Friday's close. The NASDAQ futures have opened down less than 1% this morning, which means we need ongoing weakness to get set.

US NASDAQ 100 Index

US tech stocks led declines overnight as companies such as Apple Inc., which manufactures products outside of the US, were hammered. As we often quote at MM, “Don’t fight the tape,” and the market's aggressive sell-off overnight is at risk of testing levels last seen in August.  Some great buying opportunities will undoubtedly surface in the US “ Big Tech” names, but at the moment, the technical (momentum) and fundamental (Trump) factors threaten deeper losses, i.e. be patient.

BetaShares NASDAQ 100 (NDQ)

The volatility within US Big Tech names remains very high, with Donald Trump adding fuel to the fire over the last 24 hours. We see great risk/reward in the $40 area, which could quickly unfold in the coming weeks/months and would represent a more than 20% pullback from this year's high.
