iShares Core S&P 500 Small-Cap ETF (IJR US) – USA small cap shares

Please give me your opinion about IJR which tracks US small caps. It seems good value, but has underperformed for a long while, and perhaps risky due to tariff uncertainty and currency risk.

Answer

Hi Sadhana,

Over recent years, small caps have underperformed in the US as they have in Australia. However, a few times in recent weeks when the “risk on” button was pressed in earnest the Russell 2000 did outperform the S&P 500. In terms on the ILJ ETF, a couple of initial comments:

  • The Management Fee of 0.06% is low for this index tracker, although, we do have a preference for active managers in small caps. There is lots of room for alpha generation in the small end of town.
  • However, for those looking for a passive strategy only, this does the job, hence if your bullish on US small caps and are happy to carry some $US exposure, it’s a solid ETF.
