We remain bullish on the local index, targeting a clean break above the psychological 8000 level. It's not hard to ride the bullish wave at the moment, with US and European equities posting new all-time highs almost daily while Copper and Gold continue to buoy sentiment across the influential Resources. In addition, bond markets have calmed after April's interest rate jitters, although we shouldn’t lose sight of how easily credit markets change direction after just a few economic numbers – US Futures are pricing in two rate cuts by January 2025.
Australian lithium stocks enjoyed a solid bounce last week, e.g., IGO Ltd (IGO) +11.4%, Pilbara Minerals (PLS) +10%, and Mineral Resources (MIN) +6.9%. We believe the sector will recover further, but it's still an area where investors should adopt a very active approach due to so many uncertain variables still to play out, plus most stocks are already pricing in higher lithium prices over the years.
The weakness across the Lithium Sector has lost its place in the financial press due to the strong rallies in copper and gold. Usually, more “clicks” are achieved from bad news and crash-style stories, but the lithium bear market has grown old in the tooth. However, as we’ve seen with other commodities and related stocks, this year is starting to look exciting for the commodity space, and we believe lithium can join the party, at least for a while. We aren’t as bullish towards lithium as copper, for example, with the supply & demand dynamics far from clear, but we can see them enjoying a strong finish to this FY.
The demise of lithium miners over recent times has garnered much publicity, and it has only faded from the front cover as other commodities surge higher.
In early February, one of the most dominating stories in the financial news was the plunging lithium price and demise of the related stocks. Less than 2-years ago, analysts were extrapolating huge demand for EVs over the decade ahead would continue to push the required materials, such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, ever higher, generating huge profits for the related miners, but as we now know, the demand for EVs has fallen short of estimates, especially in the influential US, which combined with increasing supply of lithium drove down prices over 80%, i.e. in this case making the market not wrong, but very wrong!
Lithium has been dominating the news around the demise of the ESG Sector for months, but nickel has come to the fore of late as the collapse in the commodities price has led to the closure of mines operated by IGO and Twiggy Forrest’s Wyloo. Now heavyweight BHP Group (BHP) is feeling the pinch with estimates that its Nickel West business is losing $50m a month. The government has even been involved as it aims for a carbon-zero economy by 2030, a big ask if Australian businesses are losing millions in the pursuit of their optimistic goal.
Last week saw leading EV manufacturer Tesla (TSLA US) plunge over -13% while the tech-based NASDAQ 100 surged to new all-time highs. The shares in Elon Musk’s $US580bn behemoth fell after the company's earnings missed expectations, and they said volume growth this year “may be notably lower” than was previously expected – this underwhelming demand for EVs, especially in the US, has been the main cause of the weakness of the lithium price and related stocks.
