HCA Healthcare (HCA US) $US331.69

Healthcare operator HCA, has 182 hospitals and 2,300+ sites of care across the US along with operations in the UK i.e. it’s a significant operator and the trends across their business are improving. We are big fans of HCA, but it's now on the expensive side of history, a concern we’ve flagged a number of times but the stock keeps rallying!

The US-based healthcare services provider rallied overnight, hitting its highest level since June on a good 4Q update and strong guidance for 2024. While the beat for the quarter was positive, with net profit of $US1.61bn beating expectations of $US1.38bn, the confidence to guide above market for 2024 was the key.

When we originally bought HCA for the International Equities Portfolio 11 months ago, it was trading on 10x FY22 projected earnings rendering it around ~13% ‘cheap’ versus its longer-term averages.

HCA Healthcare (HCA US) $US281.99

Very strong 1Q results were reported last week and we’ve seen a string of broker upgrades on the back of it pushing shares to all-time highs. Admissions were strong up by +4.4% which compares to growth of 2.9% in Q4 and they also showed a lowering use of contract labour and more hiring of full-time workers which reduces costs and speaks to easing labour pressures. This was a very good result from HCA with momentum in earnings clearly obvious and this should drive higher guidance later in the year.

Business Summary

HCA Healthcare, Inc. is a holding company. The Company, through its subsidiaries, owns and operates hospitals and related healthcare entities. It owns and operates approximately 182 hospitals, comprised of 175 general, acute care hospitals; five psychiatric hospitals; and two rehabilitation hospitals. The Company also operates around 125 freestanding surgery centers and over 21 freestanding endoscopy centers. The Company operates in two geographically organized groups: The National and American Groups. The National Group includes 96 hospitals located in Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, northern Kentucky, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah and Virginia. The American Group includes approximately 79 hospitals located in Colorado, Kansas, southern Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas. The Company also operates seven hospitals in England. Its facilities are located in over 20 states and England.
