Freeport-McMoRan (FCX US) $US47.99

FCX beat EPS estimates overnight, but the stock still slipped lower in line with a weak copper price after its stellar start to 2024. Interestingly, Scotiabank lowered their price target for FCX from $US55 to $US53; they must think it’s as good as it gets for this major copper miner, we believe they are too conservative.

FCX is the world's largest producer of molybdenum, a major copper producer, and it operates the world's largest gold mine, a perfect mix on Wednesday night, which saw the stock surge +7.6% in just one session. Like most miners, this US giant is likely to follow the prices of the commodities it produces closely.

Freeport McMoran (FCX US) $US35.27

Overnight, high quality global Copper company Freeport McMoran beat earnings expectations with their 3rd quarter. Revenue of $US5.82bn compared well to the $US5.53bn expected which drove a beat at the earnings line, with EPS of 39c versus consensus of 32c. Overall a good result that just lacked a firm market to enjoy any gains.

International Equities Portfolio

The MM International Equities Portfolio enjoyed a strong week even with the aggressive sell-off overnight, the portfolio was up 3.01% outpacing the S&P 500 which added +0.65%. Copper miner Freeport McMorRan (FCX US) +11.72% led the line supported by an 11.68% rally from Snowflake (SNOW US). Only two positions fell with Tesco (TSCO LN) down 3.58% the weakest of them while Alphabet (GOOG US) lost -0.87%.

Freeport-McMoran (FCX US) $US30.79

FCX is major global mining company with a focus on Copper and to a lesser extent Gold – two areas that have been under pressure in recent times, the former as recession fears mount. We have owned FCX in the past, having sold the position in March this year around US$50 into new highs that have subsequently failed. We now see value and are looking to add FCX back into the portfolio to build out our exposure to resources in this current pullback.

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FCX) is a mining company. The Company operates through geographical assets with proven and probable reserves of copper, gold and molybdenum, and traded copper producer. The Company's segments include refined copper products, copper in concentrate, gold, molybdenum, oil and other. The Company's segments include the Morenci, Cerro Verde, Grasberg copper mines, the Rod & Refining operations and the United States (U.S.) Oil and Gas Operations. The Company has organized its operations into five divisions, which include North America copper mines, South America mining, Indonesia mining and Molybdenum mines. The Company's portfolio of assets includes the Grasberg minerals district in Indonesia, copper and gold deposits, and mining operations in the Americas, including the large-scale Morenci minerals district in North America and the Cerro Verde operation in South America.
