BCB -9.46%: the junior coal miner provided a 2Q production update today alongside announcing the current CFO will take over the CEO role following Mark Ruston’s resignation less than 12 months in the role. Production wise Bowen managed a solid quarter despite facing significant rainfall events.

Bowen Coking Coal (BCB) 14.5c

BCB +3.57%: the Queensland coal company rallied today in line with peers, though they also released their June quarter production numbers late in the day. Operationally they’ve shown an improvement with Run-of-mine (ROM) numbers up 27.3% on pcp, though they only managed a 15% increase in coal sales.

BCB has been an underperformer of late due to its capital raise which disappointed MM as owners due to the timing and size i.e. 17c was a 22.7% discount to its previous close. It may take a little time to make a meaningful recovery but the risk/reward looks attractive on any dips under 15c.

Bowen Coking Coal (BCB) 17c

The Queensland-based met coal miner raised $40m during the week at 17c a share in a deal that was priced at a 22.7% discount to Thursday’s close before shares went into a trading halt. The deal includes a fully underwritten $10m Share Purchase Plan (SPP) which will open to retail shareholders shortly. As holders, the cap raise is frustrating, given it was done at a deep discount and is highly dilutive as a result, adding around 12.7% to shares on issue.

The Bottom Line

MM remains bullish on the coal sector into weakness believing the coal price is due to consolidate in the $US200-250/MT region. With WHC and NHC trading valuations of 2.04x and 2.63x respectively we believe the sector is too pessimistic, pricing stocks for far cheaper coal prices. • We are still looking to add to our WHC exposure into weakness under $8.

QLD based $541mn BCB is the junior player in the room, it doesn’t yet deliver bumper dividends/buybacks such as WHC & NHC. They have only recently announced their second shipment of ~40kt of metallurgical coal from its Bluff Coal mine and initial processing at Broadmeadow East, basically, this is a more aggressive/leveraged play than WHC/NHC towards higher coal prices for longer. • We hold BCB in our Emerging Companies Portfolio, at this stage we are comfortable with our 4% exposure.

We bought BCB in the Emerging Companies Portfolio late last year, with the stock down ~5% since, and down around 20% from recent highs set last week. Coal has been under pressure recently and we are largely neutral on the commodity, however, we see upside in the met coal name as they start to ramp up production across their assets. Wet weather...

Business Summary

Bowen Coking Coal Limited is an exploration and development company with a focus on metallurgical coal. Its projects include Broadmeadow East Coking Coal Project, Isaac River Coking Coal Project, Cooroorah Coking Coal Project, Comet Ridge Coking Coal Project, and Hillalong Coking Coal Project. The Broadmeadow East Coking Coal Project is covered by ML 70257 and is located approximately 25 kilometers (km) northeast of the township of Moranbah, within the Central Bowen Basin in Queensland. The Isaac River Coking Coal Project covers an area of approximately 14 square km and is located in the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, approximately 30 km west of Moranbah and 130 kilometers southwest of Mackay. The Cooroorah Coking Coal Project is located approximately 17 km north of Blackwater, between Westfarmers Curragh mine in the West and the Jellinbah Mine in the East. The Comet Ridge Coking Coal Project is located approximately 60km East of Emerald and 25 km South of the township of Comet.
