Regis Resources Limited (ASX: RRL) $7.44

Regis Resources (RRL) emerged from the battle for Vault with its balance sheet and price discipline intact, walking away from the contest in July rather than overpay and collecting a $50.7m break fee. With no debt and around $1.2bn of cash and bullion, Regis has ample firepower to pursue other opportunities, while its portfolio includes Duketon, a 30% stake in Tropicana alongside AngloGold Ashanti and the McPhillamys project in NSW. That makes RRL interesting from both sides of the M&A equation: it has the capacity to be a buyer, but its clean balance sheet, open register and valuable Tropicana stake could also make it an attractive target as consolidation continues across the sector.

Vault Minerals (VAU) has already become one of the centrepieces of that consolidation, after Regis’ agreed merger was trumped in July by a $5.6bn cash-and-scrip proposal from Genesis Minerals. Regis chose not to match the offer, clearing the way for the Genesis-Vault combination, which is expected to create a roughly $13bn gold producer with five major mines and significant processing infrastructure across WA’s Goldfields. The deal illustrates exactly what is driving the current M&A cycle: scale, neighbouring assets and the ability to extract more value from existing infrastructure.

AngloGold Ashanti (AU US) is a US$47bn goliath that’s a natural potential suitor for Regis Resources. AngloGold already owns and operates 70% of Tropicana, with Regis holding the remaining 30%, meaning a takeover would give it full control of an asset it already operates without adding new infrastructure or an operating team. The strategic connection has already attracted market attention and AngloGold’s recent acquisition activity suggests it remains comfortable using M&A to consolidate quality gold assets, i.e. rather than entering a new region, AngloGold would simply be consolidating ownership of a major mine it already operates, while picking up Regis’ broader Australian portfolio and substantial cash position.

  • We can see $5.6bn RRL being interested in a consolidation as other deals improve scale across the sector for its peers.
