One of the qualities to look for in a defensive business is pricing power, and REA’s dominance in real-estate listings ensures it can raise prices regularly. When listing a house it’s almost a given that it will be posted on www.realestate.com.au in the first instance as part of a wider campaign. The stock has come under pressure as bond yields moved higher and concern around real-estate…

It depends on who you ask whether or not wine is a ‘staple’ however history tells us that demand goes up when economic conditions tighten. TWE has had a difficult few years, much of the pain coming from their exposure to China however a repositioning of the business and a focus on higher-margin markets has Treasury well-positioned for what comes next. We like this $8bn global wine business…

The 14% pullback in the S&P 500 to start the year now looks complete, with our preference being more upside in the short term. US reporting season is underway and as we saw from Netflix, lower growth for growth companies will not be tolerated.

The ASX200 got within 8 points of all-time highs yesterday morning however by 4.10pm the market was 63pts off the milestone that MM has been calling for months. Not even a spectacular $20bn private equity bid for hospital operator Ramsay Healthcare (RHC) was enough to offset the profit-taking that crept into the dominant banks and resources throughout the session. Overall, a weak day with the market…

We’re bullish US tech stocks for at least a short, sharp bounce from oversold levels and the best way of playing that is via the locally listed Nasdaq ETF trading under code NDQ. While US tech was strong overnight, Netflix (NFLX US) reported aftermarket announcing its first customer decline in more than a decade. The stock fell 25% in after-market trade and this has weighed on the futures market since. This ETF should be up around 1.2% early on today.

This is a very interesting business that was started in Brisbane in 2001 and last year they listed on the Nasdaq via a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC),  valuing the stock at $1.2bn. They are now the world’s 2nd largest fast-charging company for electric vehicles and this week they announced a deal with BP for ~1,000 charges to go into service stations in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand – a good start but we…

Select Harvests is Australia’s second-largest almond producer with over 9,000 hectares of orchards producing around 28,000t of almonds a year. The almond market is largely controlled by Californian producers which make up more than 80% of the global market. We have started to see signs that almond prices are bouncing off lows with a significant drought in California impacting crop…

The Russell 2000 small-cap index in the US corrected ~22% to start 2022 providing a sharp negative influence for small caps globally. We now believe small caps are set for some performance catch up with 10-15% upside now MM’s preferred scenario, a solid backdrop for the highly correlated ASX.

Today I turn 40, I’m not normally big into birthdays however they say this one is meaningful, a time for reflection, to focus on what comes next. For me, hopefully, more of the same with a few more camping holidays, a bit more time with the kids, and I also feel like I need some adventures, things that offer a challenge both physically and mentally and that’s going to be a  priority over the coming years. For Market Matters and our wider investment management…
