Question asked

What do you mean by “fade the move”?

Quite frequently, MM uses the phrase 'fade the move'... see below from today's note re Gold. Exactly what is meant by this - I could hazard a guess, but better to be clear! :) Thanks, Young "We remain bullish on ASX gold miners into further weakness, finding Goldman’s “late” downgrade encouraging overnight. If it drives stocks lower in the coming week, MM is likely to fade the move as we feel the local unwind is maturing fast."

Answer

Hi Young,

Sorry for the confusion, we do try and avoid, or explain, market terminology whenever possible. Today we’ve used the specific example of gold/copper company Evolution (EVN) to  elucidate on our meaning when we say “fade a move”. EVN has fallen ~27% from its June high:

  • We are looking to “fade the move” here means MM is looking to buy/accumulate EVN into the current market weakness/correction.  i.e. go the other way. Fade the weakness = buy, fade the strength = sell.
