Stocks marked ACTIVE and when to get into gold

Hi Gents, I'll quickly take the opportunity to say thanks for all your hard work this year putting the daily reports together and for your continued dedication to helping MM members make good investment decisions. Love the transparency. Thank you. I just want to clarify the "ACTIVE" mark in the portfolios. I'm keen to up my allocation to gold but i'm trying to work out a good time to increase my exposure. I've noticed your comments recently about buying gold stocks has been that you wouldn't chase them from here, but BGL and NEM and GOLD are all marked as 'ACTIVE' in the portfolios, doesn't that mean you still think they are BUYS at current levels? When considering about increasing gold exposure, just trying to understand your commentary about not chasing names from here but also that those names are still marked 'active'. Thanks again. Josh

Answer

Hi Josh,

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated – transparency is the ethos we live and die by, hopefully more of the former! The “Active” tag is best described as a holding we are not yet intending to sell i.e. its a hold or a buy at current levels. This is clearly an area we can improve – you are not alone in questioning how this is practically applied. Markets are fluid, and while we are  happy to hold the stocks in the portfolio marked as active , you are right in highlighting that at times, commentary does deviate from these tags. Also important to note, that when investing in our portfolios via MM Invest, all stocks are bought that are listed in each portfolio.

Specifically referring to gold looking through the lens of Newmont (NEM), we originally bought the stock into the panic October sell-off, we wished MM timed them all this well. NEM has since rallied ~25% back towards its all-time high, and its actually posted new highs in the US, its primary place of listing.

  • At this stage NEM is still marked as “Active” as we aren’t looking to sell at current levels, it’s essentially a hold for us, however, each member will be different and its difficult to apply a one size fits all apporoach.
