Rocketboot’s Executive Appointment

Hi MM,

RocketBoots (ROC) today announced the appointment of Maria Phillips as Chief Financial and Operating Officer. While I imagine that ROC is far too small to be on MM’s radar, Mrs Phillips is, according to today’s announcement:

  • “a prominent senior executive having worked over 25 years at iconic brands including Nine Entertainment…Telstra…She has a successful track record of driving strategy and transformation in digital and technology sectors. Her last position was as Group CFO of Nine Entertainment (NEC), one of Australia’s largest entertainment and digital media companies."

While MM might not be familiar with ROC, given your long-standing holding in NEC, I expect you are very familiar with NEC’s management/prior management, including Mrs Phillips; and perhaps also aware of her from her time at Telstra given MM’s familiarity with Telstra. Given this, what is MM’s opinion on a microcap technology company of the nature of ROC securing Mrs Phillips as Chief Financial and Operating Officer; and your views on Mrs Phillips in general?

Thanks,

Darren

Answer

Hi Darren,

You are correct this $26mn micro-cap is not a stock which has been considered by MM in the past; it turned over less than $100k worth of stock on Thursday making it too small for us.

The announcement makes Phillips sound like the answer for this e-commerce “flash Sales” operation. Although the share price had no meaningful reaction. When she joined Nine the spiel felt very similar:

  • Nine’s CEO Hugh Marks expressed confidence in her ability, citing her “extensive experience across a broad range of consumer‑related industries, including media,” and her track record in “strategy and transformation, particularly in the digital and technology space

Her departure find Nine was somewhat abrupt in August 2023, before FY23 results, but details are thin on the ground. There is no record of her working over the last 2-years which dilutes the impact of the appointment at ROC to us. We’ve never met Phillips, and we think there is a big difference between operating in large origanisations relative to small. From experience, executives with more entrepreneurial backgrounds do better  at smaller organisations, unless, those coming from large companies can open doors for the smaller company through their contact book.

The proof will be in the pudding as they say.
