Question asked

Reliability of US economic data ?

Given the propensity of the current US administration to routinely provide unsubstantiated and often clearly incorrect information, I wonder to what extent you believe one can today depend on the accuracy and independency of statistical information such as eg. inflation numbers or any of the many financial parameters that we use to judge our investment decisions on ? Jan -

Answer

Hi Jan,

The statistical data such as the CPI (inflation data) is produced by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) — an agency within the U.S. Department of Labor. The CPI data received last night is compiled and released independently and cannot be altered by political figures, including the President or Congress.

At this stage we believe investors can take Trumps posts with a pinch of salt at times although ignoring them cost plenty of smart people money through April. However, while he doesn’t “control” the Fed, which is certainly not the case with his nemesis Jerome Powell in charge we are comfortable taking heed of the data flow for the US economy.
