Does MM see an ideal an entry point to invest in SOL?

Hi again, Hope you don't mind me sending two questions this week. Thanks in advance! I've researched Washington Soul Pattinson a few times in the past and I always missed the boat thinking the price was too high. I find myself again in a similar conundrum but this time I wonder if the coal price correction will eventually hit the share price of this stock, and I may shortly find a sweet entry point. Your thoughts on that? Thanks.

Answer

Hi Angela,

From a general investment perspective we have regularly scaled both into and out of positions which has helped us to avoid missing the proverbial boat, a method we have found has added value in the past. For example if you buy a company today you like at say $x leaving ammunition to average into further weakness it becomes a win-win scenario assuming of course the original analysis is on point.

Moving onto SOL, its certainly been a volatile stock over the last few years which is a reflection of the volatility in New Hope Coal (NHC) where SOL holds a 37.6% stake, a whopping ~$1.7bn investment on Friday afternoon.

  • MM is long and bullish & New Hope (NHC) & Whitehaven Coal (WHC) which rallied strongly on Friday because the market came to appreciate just how much cash they are producing, hence we would be accumulating SOL now if we were looking for some additional quasi-coal exposure.
