iShares European Equities ETF (IEU) confusion

Hi Guys I appreciated the write up last Friday on the 5 ETFs and like the look of IEU, esp with a claimed 0.09% fee. I do wonder though if there's been a mix up, as the Factsheet for IEU indicates fees are 0.59% and AUM is cA$930M (rather than the US$6.5B referred to in the article)? Thanks

Answer

Hi Brett,

Sorry for the confusion, the iShares European Equities ETF (IEU) has versions on both the ASX and in the US where not surprisingly its larger:

  • On the ASX the IEU ETF it has a market cap of ~$910mn and attracts a fee of 0.59%.
  • In the US its equivalent (IEUR US) has a market cap of ~$US6.7bn and attracts a fee of 0.09%

In last Fridays report we were riginally covering  the US version, but changed to the ASX version to make more relevant, and mixed up the two fee scedules in the process, our mistake.

They are very similar, however, the US version is unhedged, so you are effectively buying European assets with $US. The performance has subsequently been different in 2025 with the IEU +20.9% and IEUR +27.1% helped by a weak $US.
