Do the US Elections Matter?

Hi Guys I have heard a lot of commentary that if the Dems win the US election again it will be very negative for stocks due to Kamal Harris proposed policy changes. Should we consider this as a macro risk when thinking about our US investments or is it just noise? Interested in MM thoughts on this please. Many thanks Alex

Answer

Hi Alex,

We regard this as fascinating macro noise, especially with the Bookmakers having Trump and Harris running neck and neck.

  • If Trump wins it may weigh on the ESG names and companies exporting to China will be vulnerable to a trade war. However, his tax cuts should benefit many companies.
  • If Harris wins, she’s looking to make the Food Industry more competitive to reduce prices for people, this might hurt some of the big entrenched monocopy style players.

However, at the end of the day, we think it’s probably marginal and good old fashioned earnings will dictate equity price, and we’re better off trying to pick those we think!
