Whitehaven Coal (WHC) – take losses or be patient?

Hello guys, Similar to the assessment you prepared about RHC, I would appreciate your views on Coal and the investment in WHC. My investment thesis included: the Russian sections would favour Australian coal producers; a normalisation of labour conditions in Australia and less disruptions to the coal supply chain would see a decrease in operating costs; energy markets are still disrupted and next winter in the northern hemisphere is predicted to be colder due to the El Niño weather pattern moving in. I suppose all the above may mean nothing if recession fears are too strong. Is WHC a hold or a sell? Thanks, Angela

Answer

Hi Angela,

We are holding Whitehaven Coal (WHC), similar to SFR we like the medium term logic towards coal but in hindsight we entered too early as recession fears weigh on the resources. Indeed if we held a position of 3% in our Flagship Growth Portfolio, as opposed to 4%, we would be increasing our exposure.
