Question asked

Does MM still like the coal price and coal stocks?

1) You have written recently about coal. However, if I'm not mistaken, the coal price decreased significantly since your last comments - currently USD$262 per tonne if the source I am looking at it is accurate (?). Do your recent comments/views on coal prices remain the same despite the recent significant coal price drop, and what is your coal price outlook? Also, do you still remain long and bullish on WHC, BCB and NHC? 2) LYC - I note your 30.01.23 comments on LYC's Q2 production report. If MM did not currently hold LYC, would it consider it a Buy at current levels, or an Accumulate or Hold; and what would be MM's ideal entry point? Many thanks, Darren

Answer

Hi Darren,

  1. As we discussed in our What Matters Today on Friday MM is looking to buy the current weakness in coal stocks – “We currently hold a 3% position in WHC, we are considering increasing this to 4-5% into further weakness under $8.”. Whitehaven Coal (WHC) briefly dipped under $8 on Friday before bouncing however we do believe another opportunity will present itself in the coming weeks.
  2. We remain bullish towards Lynas (LYC) with an ideal entry close to $9.
