Catapult Group International (CAT)

Dear James & Shawn Thank you for the good work. I know you have discussed your views on Catapult fairly extensively recently, however, I am coming from a slightly different slant. I have been caught napping on CAT as I started following it since the $1.25 mark. At $3.38 I strongly considered starting a position, however, I was weary that I may be yet another crowd favourite ending in the "naughty box" (a la Audinate and others), and expected a correction of sorts, which obviously didn't eventuate. I am now considering starting a small position to get "my foot into the door" in case CAT keeps on steaming ahead. With an EV/EBITDA of 575 and P/B of 13.7x it is not cheap and my rational mind suggests it may be due for a substantial correction, so I am in two thoughts. Your views? Would you invest in CAT at these levels ($6+) if MM wasn't invested already?

Answer

Hi Lambertus,

That’s  a great question as we’ve all found ourselves in similar situations over the years and almost certainly will again. At MM we provide General Advice hence we will answer this question with a broad brush:

  • Firstly, we like this sports analytics company seeing a substantial growth runway ahead – good job when its carrying  a valuation of ~$1.7bn: MM owns CAT in its Emerging Companies Portfolio.

Last month CAT reported FY25 revenue of $US116.5m and free cash flow (FCF) of $8.6m, with revenue up 19% YoY. However, while the business is performing strongly we understand investors concern with the stock up six-fold in under two years. Human psychology makes a shocking investor/trader, it pushes us to grab profits and only buy dips not strength.

At MM we have often scaled both into and out of positions, a method we like which looks appropriate with a stock such as CAT which has run hard. If we had no position in CAT we would look to accumulate into dips but notice we no longer have an “Active” Tag on our position which means we aren’t buyers at current levels. Monday will likely see some weakness after the CEO offloaded ~$17m worth of shares on Friday.
