Question asked

Could you explain Algo trading etc

Hi guys, Thanks for the great reports each day and the work which goes on behind the scenes. I'd really like to make use of algo trading / robots / ea's or whatever other term you'd like to use. I've had a go at coding some before, but they've never been that successful. Could you give any advice on what the institutions use / how they trade, or if its even possible for a retail trader to simulate their strategies. I'd be looking to run it on indexes and maybe FX if I could adapt to suit. Regards, Simon

Answer

Hi Simon,

When it comes to algo trading its purely depends on the resources/ tech capacity at your disposal,  the big institutions will always have an edge on this as they have big budgets to attract key talent to help build such a tool.

The current superstars on wall street trading floors are the Quants who spend countless hours creating and back testing these strategies, to do this successfully you need top level understanding of the product you are trading and what order execution edge you have over the other traders. In my view this is big ask for a retail investor to copy as they don’t normally have the ability to code such tools which are accurate in accounting of various levels of volatility but even if you manage to get a semi decent strategy in place it will then come down to order execution which retail can almost never been on par with vs the big banks/ institutions.

You can research online to play around with off shelf strategies but it is something that might be very generic and not profitable in the long run. Also don’t underestimate the AI influence that’s been evolving in markets over the last few years.
