US stocks have entered a holding pattern ahead of tonight’s jobs report, but our preference is that the Dow will ultimately make new highs in a similar fashion to the S&P500 and NASDAQ. It’s likely to be a simple game tonight; if the employment data comes in around expectations or slightly weaker, it will be good news for stocks, but other extremes could raise concerns around interest rates or a potential recession.

US stocks consolidated recent gains overnight, although it was a fairly quiet session. Consumer Staples were the only sector that moved in either direction by over 1%, and it gained +1.5 %. Some profit-taking in the “Big Tech” stocks dragged the indices back from fresh highs, with Microsoft, Amazon.com., Meta Platforms, Netflix, and Nvidia all closing lower.

Iran and a number of its allies launched a large-scale drone and missile attack upon Israel on Saturday night in retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike on an Iranian diplomatic complex in Syria. The prospects of a full-blown conflict in the region have increased dramatically over the last week, with at least nine countries involved in Saturday's conflict, projectiles fired from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemen were downed by Israel, the US and France, as well as Jordan. Following Iran's attack, the U.S. pledged "ironclad" backing for Israel, but President Joe Biden made it clear the US would not participate in any offensive operations against Iran.

US indices experienced a choppy and quiet session overnight before reporting season really gets underway in earnest – of the main indices, all but the Russell 2000 small cap index is trading at all-time highs. Hence this will be a real test of market valuations after the recent 3-4 months bullish advance. It caught our attention how many bears have gained airtime over recent days, which historically means stocks go higher before encountering selling, i.e. investing with the press/consensus is a dangerous game.

Overnight, US stocks enjoyed a strong session as war jitters appeared to abate, with crude oil falling ~2.5%. The S&P500 ended up +1.3%, delivering its best performance since August, with communications services outperforming courtesy of stocks like Netflix (NFLX US), Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD US) and Verizon Communications (VZ US) all surging well over +3%.
