The Dow posted fresh highs overnight, again, boosted by Nvidia (+3.4%) after Elon Musk said that SpaceX would only use Nvidia processors when building its AI computing infrastructure in the future. In SpaceX’s earnings call, he said Nvidia has “the best AI computer,” before adding, “We’re exclusive to Nvidia.” However, SpaceX shares dropped more than 13% after the rocket company released its first quarterly report since going public in June, closing ~$US108, having IPO’s at $US135.

The Dow recovered over half of Thursdays decline overnight as Microsoft surged +15.5% after strong Azure cloud growth reinforced confidence that AI infrastructure spending is yielding results, sparking a broad rebound across semiconductor stocks. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) climbed more than +8%, with Micron Technology jumping +18% and AMD rising more than +13%, while South Korean memory giant SK Hynix rallied over +17%. The move reignited the momentum trade, with the iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (MTUM) gaining more than +5% as investors rotated back into AI-linked names.

Historically, the Dow Jones (0.97x) has the strongest correlation with the ASX 200, reflecting both indices' heavier exposure to industrials, financials and energy rather than technology - unfortunately the ASX isn’t listening at the moment! The Dow may feel stretched at a glance having surged more than +18% from its April tariff panic low but we wouldn’t consider fighting the trend as we head into the US reporting season. Consensus expectations are for +24% earnings growth in Q2.

US stocks have entered a holding pattern ahead of tonight’s jobs report, but our preference is that the Dow will ultimately make new highs in a similar fashion to the S&P500 and NASDAQ. It’s likely to be a simple game tonight; if the employment data comes in around expectations or slightly weaker, it will be good news for stocks, but other extremes could raise concerns around interest rates or a potential recession.

US stocks consolidated recent gains overnight, although it was a fairly quiet session. Consumer Staples were the only sector that moved in either direction by over 1%, and it gained +1.5 %. Some profit-taking in the “Big Tech” stocks dragged the indices back from fresh highs, with Microsoft, Amazon.com., Meta Platforms, Netflix, and Nvidia all closing lower.
