CCP +16.19% is a very volatile stock, particularly around results time and while it’s been a poor performer over the past 12 months, it did have a similar rally this time last year. CCP +13.95%: Rallied today after reporting FY24 results that on an underlying basis were mildly stronger than expected, though that wasn’t as obvious when the numbers first hit given an impairment and change in accounting estimates to do with collections i.e. lengthening the collection life cycle assumption from six years to eight years for accounting purposes had a negative impact. Looking through this, the debt collector reported underlying net profit after tax (NPAT) of $81.2m vs consensus of $73.5m while the dividend for the 2H of 23cps was ahead of expectations.

CCP -2.55%: the lender and debt recovery agency was out with 1H numbers today, kicking off the reporting season on a slightly sour tone. Credit Corp flagged a $45m write down of their US Purchased Debt Ledgers (PDLs) at the AGM in October given a weak collection environment that continued through the end of the year.

The company said collection conditions had continued to deteriorate after flagging the higher delinquencies at results in August. With the “mortgage cliff” about to hit Australia through 2H we feel there’s a good chance of an increase of debt to be purchased while the strong employment data suggests defaults won’t blow out as many had expected in 2023.

Debt collector CCP more than halved from its 2021 high but it feels like the weakness which followed its August result, albeit in a falling market, may have washed out the sellers and it looks good ~$20. Importantly from an investment perspective, the result led to weakness as the company guided a lower net income of $90-$97m but on 14.4x FY23 earnings, CCP is still around fair value in MM’s view. While we’re all concerned about economic stress, ironically, one of the issues facing CCP is the availability of bad debts to collect, these are at low levels making them expensive. Bad debts are essentially the company’s inventory. • We like CCP and can see over 20% upside over the coming weeks.
