AMP fell -7.2% on Monday although it might surprise many to know it’s still up +18% year-to-date. Last week saw AMP beat first-half profit estimates with strong growth in its wealth, adviser and NZ divisions lifting AMP’s underlying profit by 9.2% to $131 million in the first half of the financial year, pushing shares to a new 5-year high.

Rising markets will lead to earnings upgrades but we want to see more operational wins although the stock is looking more interesting as an FY26 story given the likes of reduced wealth outflows, digital SME bank driving lower funding costs, and divestments being recycled into capital management.

AMP tumbled -15.8% to fresh multi-year lows on Thursday after trying to hide lower margin expectations with the announcement of a new Digital Bank, not the sort of behaviour required by a company that’s been in the “naughty corner” for over 15 years. They should address investor concerns and not gloss over issues like tight margins through FY23 and into 2024.
