Gaining exposure to Agriculture

Hi people I’m enjoying the new website . Thanks for the work to set it up For a while I have been keen to establish a holding in the agriculture sector . My searches have not yielded much choice . There is Elders;Nufarm and Costa for example or even Orica but none of those really appeal ( or I have a basis ). Any thoughts on how best to otherwise gain exposure to the Australian agricultural sector Enjoy your Easter break - Thanks and cheers Shane

Answer

Hi Shane,

Thanks for the thumbs up on the website. One feature that you and others might find useful is the search. In your example, finding investments in the agricultural space, you would simply select agriculture in the sectors drop down menu. Ensure nothing else is selected and it will given you a list of Ag stocks or ETFs on the site.

You’re right in terms of stocks listed on the ASX with Elders, Nufarm, Costa etc. We hold the DB Agricultural Fund (DBA US) in the MM ETF portfolio which tracks a basket of related commodities such as Corn, Soybeans, Sugar, Live Cattle, Wheat and the like. Betashares has recently listed a similar sort of ETF on the ASX under code QAG, which is a currency hedged basket of the  same sort of commodities, although it’s expensive with a management costs of 1.44% p/a.

In terms of Aussie focused Ag, Graincorp (GNC) looks interesting here as does Nufarm (NUF). I’ll attempt a morning note of Agriculture in the coming weeks – it’s a space we’re interested in.
