Who’s buying what and when

Hi guys, question about finding out who is buying what stocks and when. I've seen commentators mention this type of information. For instance, last week I saw commentators referring to L1 Capital increasing their exposure to MIN or regularly you'll hear commentators talking about directors selling. How do they know? Is it only via Notice of change of interests of substantial holder forms lodged, or do commentators and Market Matters for instance have access to data that retail investors don't. How can we find out as retail investors when people buy or sell down and have you thought of including something like this in the analysis section of the research part of the website? Thanks for all your excellent advice, Josh

Answer

Hi Josh,

As you suspected this information is shown when we see change of interests of substantial holder forms lodged.

  • On the MM Website when you look at a Stock, under the Analysis section members can click on Announcements to see changes in substantial holders which must be lodged by investors who hold more than 5% in a stock, or a change of Directors interests etc for Directors of a company –  we have used BHP as an example here.
  • We do have some slightly deeper insight we use via Bloomberg, though each Bloomberg terminal we have costs around 4k per month.

We do write about these when relevant, but we are unable to pass on the data in raw form – there are so many licencing rules when it comes to dissemination of exchange data!
