Thoughts on nickel stocks including MCR please

Hi James & Team, Your current view on Nickel stocks please. Mincor had a SPP at $1.39 which closed early Jan & seemed great value when the stock reached $1.87 in late Jan. However its fallen below the $1.39 this week. Is this an opportunity or is the outlook for nickel still weak from here? Is IGO a better choice as it is diversified (nickel ,lithium etc) regards Debbie

Answer

Hi Debbie,

We answered a question on nickel last week with some of the points pertinent here:

  • High energy lithium-ion batteries use nickel, cobalt and manganese, whereas LFP batteries use lithium iron phosphate, a non-toxic material, as the cathode material i.e. no nickel. With the later gaining more traction of late nickel has lost some of its lustre as an ESG investment making this no longer an area MM wants to be aggressively long.

We prefer IGO over MCR in the nickel/lithium/EV space, this is a rapidly evolving industry where we would like to stick with the proven names who are making  a profit and paying a dividend i.e. in general todays market is not rewarding growth and optimism towards future earnings.

MM holds IGO in our Flagship Growth Portfolio but only with a relatively small 3% weighting.
