Question asked

Can you possibly explain Telstra’s proposed restructure?

Hi James,
Telstra's proposed restructure is about as clear as mud to me. Perhaps you could put it in simplified terms that I can understand and also offer your opinion on it.
Cheers
Stuart

Answer

Hi Stuart,

I hope this helps with Telstra Group (TLS) looking to effectively become 4 distinct subsidiaries.  The reason they are doing this is because investors have trouble valuing the individual parts of Telstra and they think by separating them out, the value will be become more obvious.

  1. The physical infrastructure assets including fibre data centres & exchanges which are TLS’s fixed telecoms network.
  2. Mobile Tower assets – TLS is already seeking expressions of interest for these.
  3. Customer facing businesses such as mobile radio access network and mobile spectrum assets.
  4. Telstra International which includes subsea cables.

Telstra shareholders are set to vote on this substantial corporate restructure with the Telco goliath pushing the new structures “transparency” and “flexibility”.   On balance MM believes it should be a good development for shareholders.
