Question asked

Van Eck ETF (ASX: GOAT)

Hi James and team, This is Australia's first AI ETF launched this week . I would appreciate your thoughts and if you are considering it for the ETF Portfolio?

Answer

Hi Richard,

Firstly, the GOAT is not a new ETF, it’s a rebrand. The ASX code GOAT previously belonged to the VanEck Morningstar International Wide Moat ETF, which tracked the Morningstar Developed Markets ex-Australia Wide Moat Focus Select Index. VanEck has converted it, the fund’s name changed to VanEck Dynamic International Equity ETF and the reference index switched to the Akros Enhanced World ex Australia Index, effective market open on 20 July 2026.

  • The management fee also reduced from 0.55% to 0.49% per annum.

From a holdings perspective, VanEck notified Wide Moat ETF investors that, unless they sold their holdings before 17 July 2026, they would automatically transition into the new Akros AI-driven strategy with no action required. Investors could instead sell their units on the ASX.

  • The change is significant, effectively shifting investors who took no action from a Morningstar-screened quality/value strategy into an AI-driven momentum and signals-based investment approach.

The new GOAT ETF tracks the Akros Enhanced World ex Australia Index, built using generative reinforcement learning. Unlike conventional strategies that start with a fixed factor library or human-defined view, the model starts from a blank slate. Each month, the AI model analyses more than 10,000 signals across company fundamentals, technical indicators, and macroeconomic data, selecting 150 international companies from a universe of approximately 1,200 of the world’s largest developed-market stocks.
