Question asked

Electricity rate increases

Hi guys What are your views on impact of the upcoming (August 2023) electricity tariffs increases with respect to inflation trajectory and interest rates. Is it too late to jump onto the likes of Origin/AGL?? Got my tarrif increase letter from my retailer and the increase they are said to be increasing the rates by 32% and 49% (off peak/peak). Regards Michael

Answer

Hi Michael,

Energy price rises are inflationary, and so too is the rise in wages. This is why the RBA remains likely to raise rates again (at least once).  We continue to like AGL Energy (AGL), while the investment case/conviction is now lower with the stock up ~70% from purchase, we still think there is further upside.
