Coal price movements

Hi James, Happy New Year and congratulations on the strong performance of your portfolios over the last 12 months. I am watching the coal price push up each day yet WHC seems capped at a high of $2.96. I am interested in understanding what is required to break through this cap and what do you see as the upside potential for WHC. Regards Jeff

Answer

Hi Jeff,

Thanks Jeff, always nice to enjoy some wins but now it’s time to look through the windscreen and knuckle down again. We are still long Whitehaven Coal (WHC) in our Flagship Growth Portfolio hence like yourself we are watching very carefully. The $3 area represents the mid-point of the stocks drop from its October high and of course it has psychological significance. At this stage we are looking for the recovery to eventually punch through $3 and probably reach the $3.25 area but its clearly a very fluid situation where we must all remain flexible.
