The almond producer came under pressure after a disease outbreak in bees along the east coast threatened pollination in the upcoming season. The varroa mite has been detected in parts of NSW with the initial lockdown of hives failing to limit the spread causing a state-wide lockdown. Almond producers need the bees for pollination and the current 6-month-long emergency order overlaps with the pollination period. Select Harvests updated the market yesterday saying there is “no previous experience to allow it to readily assess the implications” of these measures but largely remains hopeful that the regulator and industry bodies will work on a system to certify hives and allow enough hives to move to service the agricultural industry. Select will need ~55,000 hives to ensure adequate pollination.
