Capricorn Metals Limited (ASX: CMM) $14.81

Capricorn Metals (CMM) arguably offers one of WA’s most attractive long-life growth stories, with Karlawinda producing a record 124koz in FY26 and expansion towards 150kozpa underway, while development-ready Mt Gibson is targeting 260kozpa over a 19-year mine life. Together, the projects underpin Capricorn’s ambition to produce 500kozpa within five years, backed by a pristine balance sheet with $507m in cash and gold, no debt and no hedging. For a potential acquirer, the attraction is obvious: Capricorn offers the long-life WA production and growth profile Gold Fields was seeking through Northern Star, but at a fraction of the price ($6.8bn vs. $33bn), with the logical time to strike being before Mt Gibson is built and fully reflected in the valuation.

However, Capricorn would be a difficult company to buy cheaply. Chairman Mark Clark and the board have meaningful skin in the game and a strong record of creating shareholder value, giving them both the incentive and credibility to reject an opportunistic approach. The company is also behaving more like a buyer than a seller, including taking strategic stakes in other explorers, demonstrated by its appetite for consolidation, acquiring Warriedar Resources for ~$188m in 2025 and combining its Golden Range assets with the nearby Mt Gibson growth hub.

CMM is a top-quality gold stock that we’re sure many larger peers would love to acquire, but as alluded to above, they would probably need to pay “overs” to get a deal across the line. Conversely, a merger with the similarly sized Ramelius (RMS) could have strategic merit, combining Capricorn’s growth pipeline with Ramelius’ substantial processing infrastructure and expanding Mt Magnet hub.

  • We believe CMM is an appealing target for many larger gold miners, but a merger could make more sense.
